CSSF Entity Search tool

Search the CSSF register of supervised entities by name and read back the entity type, the CSSF code, the registered address and the LEI. Free, no account, and nothing is stored.

Search the CSSF register Supervised entities, Luxembourg

Enter the legal name as registered with the CSSF, not the marketing name. A few characters are enough. Leave out the legal form — S.A., S.à r.l., SICAV — if nothing comes back.

What the CSSF register is

The Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier supervises the Luxembourg financial sector and publishes the lists of the entities under its supervision: credit institutions, investment firms and other professionals of the financial sector, investment funds, management companies, alternative investment fund managers, payment and electronic money institutions, and more recently crypto-asset service providers.

Each supervised entity carries a CSSF code: a letter that says what kind of entity it is, followed by digits. The letter is the part worth knowing, because it tells you at a glance whether you are looking at a bank, a fund, a management company or a payment institution.

CSSF code prefixes

The first character of the code identifies the category.

Why a search returns nothing

In most cases the entity exists and the search term is the problem.

CauseWhat is happening
Marketing name searched The register carries the legal name. A fund marketed under a short name is often registered under a much longer one.
Legal form typed differently S.à r.l., S.a r.l. and Sarl are the same company written three ways. Search the distinctive part of the name instead.
A sub-fund rather than the umbrella Compartments of an umbrella fund are not always listed in their own right. Search the umbrella.
Recently authorised The published lists reflect a given date. An entity authorised since then appears only in the next publication.
Supervision withdrawn An entity whose authorisation has lapsed leaves the list. Its absence today says nothing about its past status.
Passporting into Luxembourg An institution authorised in another Member State and operating here under the European passport is supervised at home, not by the CSSF, and is listed differently.
Searching by LEI This tool matches on the name. The LEI is returned with the result, but it is not what the search reads.

What a result proves, and what it does not

It shows the entity was on the published list

That is a snapshot of a register which changes. For a decision that matters, check the date of the CSSF publication you are relying on.

It does not define the scope of the authorisation

Being a supervised PFS says nothing about which activities the entity is actually authorised to carry out. That is in the authorisation itself.

It is not a compliance certificate

Appearing on a supervision list is not a statement about the entity’s standing, its finances, or its conduct.

The LEI is a separate identifier

The CSSF code and the LEI serve different purposes. Check the LEI against GLEIF if you need its live registration status.

Frequently asked questions

What is a CSSF code?

It is the identifier the CSSF gives a supervised entity: a prefix character for the category, followed by digits. The prefix table above lists the seventeen categories, from B for a bank to Z for a payment institution.

How current is the data?

It reflects the CSSF lists as published. The register changes as authorisations are granted and withdrawn, so for anything with legal consequences, consult the CSSF site directly and note the publication date.

Can I search by CSSF code or by LEI?

The search matches on the entity name. The CSSF code and the LEI are returned with the result, when the register records them.

Why is the LEI column sometimes empty?

Not every supervised entity has an LEI recorded against it in the register. An empty cell means no LEI was found there, not that the entity has none.

Does appearing here mean the entity is authorised today?

It means it appeared on the list this tool draws from. Authorisations are granted and withdrawn continuously, and the official CSSF register is the authority.

Do you store the names I search for?

No. The query is passed to the lookup and the answer is shown to you. Nothing is recorded.
